We had been talking a few months ago about a collective homegrown hop brew or rhizome swap. I also have a friend who's got some land and wants to trial a bunch of plants before he ramps up.
Can everyone list the hops they're growing at home and whether they'd be able to sacrifice cutting of the root (rhizome) for my friend? I'll start:
Cascade - Can give 1 or 2 rhizomes Fuggles - Is likely being pulled out this year so I can sacrifice a lot of rhizomes Nugget - Will be a 3rd year plant and can give away some rhizomes Wild Hop - This is a wild hop that was given to a friend of mine by a friend down the road. It was growing wild on the side of her barn. We think this is a remnant of the hops that grew here in the ~1800s before powdery mildew and verticillum wilt drove the hop agriculture to the Washington/Oregon area. Smells and tastes good but I haven't had a chance to do a good test batch. Rhizomes won't be available for a few years.

I have a friend who bought a house that has hops growing. All he was told is they are German hops. I can check it out.

With the caveat that I won't truly know until I dig, my best guess is:
Cascade: 1-3 rhizomes Chinook: 1-2 rhizomes
I also have Fuggle, Nugget and Sterling, but they'll need another year to get established, based on last year's growth.

Tony, sometimes that's all you need to know. Keep us updated on those! I had my hands on some Hallertau but they didn't survive last winter.

If anyone has any extra in wouldn't mind starting at my place as well and can offer future rhizomes when they get going. Maybe we can talk more at a future spring meeting?

Yeah there should be plenty for you to get a few. I'm thinking the May meeting may be a good time for the swap as that's about the time they should be planted in the ground.

So here's what I've got so far. Plenty of Cascade and Fuggles to go around but the rest are more limited.
Cascade - 1-2 from Alex, 1-3 from Christy Fuggles - Lots from Alex Nugget - 1-2 from Alex Centennial - 1-2 from Jeremy, 1-2 from Dan Chinook - 1-2 from Christy, 1-2 from Jeremy Unknown German - Potentially some from Tony, not confirmed.
We've got the following plants that aren't ready to give up rhizomes yet: Another Fuggles, another Nugget, Wild Hop and Sterling.

Has anyone else trimmed their hop crowns yet? I was thinking of doing it soon since my Cascade has a ton of shoots.

I trimmed the bullish first shoots yesterday. I also poked around a bit but unfortunately didn't find any rhizomes I could cut for sharing. Looks like shoots are still only coming from last year's planted rhizome. They are, however, very vigorous and have some nice feeder roots too so I'm sure they'll start spreading this summer...which means rhizomes for next spring.

Alright I've got a few potential rhizomes so I'll take some time tomorrow to trim it back. I'm hoping they'll be good in the fridge for a month or so until my friend can plant them.. from what I've read online I should be OK.

Hey all, something we all forgot about (except the ever vigilant Denny) was the hop rhizome exchange. It's a little late in the season but if people are still willing to trim their plants roots and give away some rhizomes then I suggest posting here and acting fast. We can't wait until next meeting so we'll all have to make arrangements to pick up or deliver the rhizomes. I'd still be interested in a few. Here are some good how to Videos if you aren't sure. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvvj5Lu3bWswww.youtube.com/watch?v=fZrFcuSgcNU
