Hi Alex and others, I decided to move discussion of the tilt over here if that's OK.
The tilt's a bit high end, and money is tight, but there are a couple of great reasons to put the money in now.
The best thing about the tilt is that it throws all it's data to a smart phone. Theoretically, I should be able to monitor the gages on the screen of my phone. This is super important to me because I'm totally blind and I can't read the onboard gages on a standard hydrometer. I don't advertise being blind, but I don't hide either. I figure it comes up when it comes, so don't feel acward for not knowing. :-)
The other nice thing about the tilt is that Niagara College is planning to implement it in the entire brewery ficility for their courses. I took a quick look at the android app and I'm able to do everything the app will let me do without having the metre connected. So, I'm looking at this as a way to learn the process I'll actually be using in class before I get emersed in it, but the other advantage is, if some feature of the app doesn't work for me as a blind person, I could work with the college and the developer to get it straightened out. The next intake for the course is January, and it is entirely likely that I'll be declined on the first try. That gives me lots of time to iron out any kinks.
If any one has experience using this thing, I'd love to know what you think. Or, if I'm the earliest adopter, I'll be happy to show it off once I get one.
Have fun,
Erik

That makes sense now that I know you're blind! The regular ol' hydrometer is a cheap and effective tool, but only if you can read it.
I am curious how the Tilt is going to work. There is at least one other option I'm aware of (The Brew Bug I think), but if Niagara is going to use The Tilt then it makes sense for you to get that one. Let us know how it goes when/if you get it! I can definitely think of a few brews where I wish I didn't have to take hydrometer samples to monitor fermentation (lagers, high gravity ales etc).

Thanks for the tip about the beer bug. I was able to read up on it here: www.thebeerbug.com/products/Nice looking piece of kit. I wouldn't mind having both eventually because I can be a bit gadget greedie, but the tilt is cheaper by about 80 bucks US. I'm haven't read enough to be sure whether there's a good reason for the price break. Anyhow, I'll order my tilt early next week along with some starters and see if I can make the basics work. Have fun, Erik

I've had my eye on the tilt for some time now. I'm not sure if you get a better deal on shipping/duty if you buy more but I'm interested in buying one too.

I had to run around in a few circles to get an online quote, but according to the website, the shipping is $32 flat. I stopped at five devices but seriously, if you're buying more than five at once I'd hope they'd be willing to work with you. After shipping and exchange, I'm looking at $200 or so for one. I'm not complaining, but if we could arrange a club discount for bulk purchase, even 5 or 10 per sent would help cut into that bulky currency exchange especially with flat rate shipping. Now, what happens when it hits the border? that's any body's guess. They don't offer any options or detales about the shipping they use. I could call them and find out if their international shipments are brokered. Best, Erik I've had my eye on the tilt for some time now. I'm not sure if you get a better deal on shipping/duty if you buy more but I'm interested in buying one too.

Even if we cut down on shipping and duty costs I'm in.

Great. I'll send you my number in a private message and we can figure out the best way to get this done. I'll also email around. I may be able to use some of my connections to get us a bit more off, but I need it regardless if I want to start brewing. If anyone else wants in, speak up in the next few days. Have fun, Even if we cut down on shipping and duty costs I'm in.

Hi, below is the text of an email I got from Marcus in response to my enquirie. If they do cover import just for keeping in touch, that seems like a reel confidence booster to me. Best, Erik > Erik, > Thanks for reaching out! Shipping to Canada is $32 USD. We use USPS. We > typically ship within a few days, though it says a week on our website. The > Tilt is made in the US (California to be exact). I'm not certain if it > qualifies under the NAFTA 'free trade' agreement (I just did some research > and it's unclear). I presume it does. We have several Canadian customers. > I'd be interested to know what your experience is with customs in Canada. > If you're charged customs fees, I'll cover them if you're willing to let me > know one way or another. > > We currently don't give any discounts or samples for reviews. Our margins > are very small as we are a 3 person startup bootstrapping our way as we > grow. We always welcome and appreciate when our customers provide impartial > reviews, however. Please let me know if you have additional questions. > Cheers, > Marcus Even if we cut down on shipping and duty costs I'm in.
