The University of Guelph is offering a 3-seminar series on beer. They're all on a Sunday, noon-2:30pm in Guelph. Each one is $50 (or all 3 for $120) + tax. Not exactly geared towards the home brewer but I think they have the potential to be interesting (some more than others, perhaps). The website is www.uoguelph.ca/hftm/beer.
Seminar 1: Beer Basics (Oct. 16, 2016). This seminar will cover everything from the difference between ales and lagers, micro vs. macro, core and extra ingredients, the brewing process and its history, and how to snuff out a bad beer.
We will cover the different beer styles, how and why they came about, and of course taste a couple examples. Everything you need to hold your own in a craft beer bar.
Seminar 2: Canadian Brewing Traditions (Jan. 29, 2017). Focusing on the rich beer traditions entrenched in our nation’s history. The rise, fall and current resurgence of beer in Canada. John Molson & John Labatt were real guys, how Prohibition varied across the country and where we are headed with beer.
The team at Escarpment Labs will join us to talk about the exciting work they do with brewing yeast, and how they are helping Ontario brewers tackle some new ground.
Seminar 3: Farmhouse Fermentation: Beer and cheese (Mar. 26, 2017). Wine has always been the go to pairing with cheese, but beer is a worthy contender.
Beer and cheese share a long history of farmhouse production, leading to a variety of regional styles and varieties of pairings. From the monastic traditions and small scale home productions beer and cheese share a lot in common.
This is not intended to fully sway anyone over to the beer camp merely to introduce the delicious world of beer and cheese pairing. Be prepared to dazzle and challenge your tastebuds.
