I know a few of us are big IPA brewers.. I'm wondering if anyone else has experience with brewing IPAs with Citra? Jeremy I'm looking in your direction. The beer I brewed ended up finishing at 1.010, 6.7% ABV and 55 IBUs, however the resulting beer seems sweet. I've brewed this recipe countless times with all Galaxy hops and never get this sweetness, so I'm thinking it could be the Citra hops.
I brewed my Fridgehammer IPA but used magnum for bittering and all Citra in the boil and dry hop. It was 0.5 oz Citra @ 30 mins, 0.5 oz Citra @ 15 mins, 1 oz Citra @ 0 mins and 3oz Citra dry hop for 3 days. THe grain bill is simple.. 88% 2 row and 12% munich I mashed at 150F for a very fermentable wort.
Has anyone else experienced this sweetness with using all Citra hops? My next brew of this recipe will have half Citra and half Chinook as the dry hop to see if that helps reduce the sweetness.

I can't help you, Alex, but I'm interested in the answer since I'm looking at a black IPA down the road and want a grapefruit hop flavour. I was looking at some Citra at the end for a citrus sweetness.

I have noticed that sweetness your talking about from Citra. I like to describe it as grapefruit with sugar on it. I noticed that same taste in commercial citra beers and to be honest I really like that character from the hop. Hope this helps. Cheers

For my tastes I'm not a big fan of the sweetness I was getting from Citra. I looked back through my brew notes and realized that I removed my false bottom shortly AFTER adding my bittering hops, so I'm thinking I pulled some of the hops out and probably didn't get the 55 IBU that I calculated. I think the combination of that and the natural "sweetness" from Citra is why this beer is too sweet for my tastes.
Don't get me wrong though, I love the character Citra has provided. I think a Galaxy/Citra combo may be where my house IPA is heading.
